Disaster Relief

Tennessee Disaster Relief is a cooperative, volunteer ministry of the Tennessee Baptist Convention and its affiliated churches.  It is totally dependent upon volunteers who give of their time, energy, talents and finances to assist others in a time of disaster.  Working closely with FEMA, the Red Cross and other agencies, TN Disaster Relief is one of the first to respond during a time of crisis.  Our Association owns equipment, including a bucket truck and provides leadership and coordination with our churches and individuals in Knox County who participate in disaster relief.

Lou Mulsand is the Coordinator of KCAB’s Disaster Relief ministry. To contact him call 865-693-9097 or email info@kcab.org

Tennessee DR Training Facts

·   All volunteers must be 18 years old to serve.
·   All volunteers must be a member of a cooperating Tennessee Southern Baptist Church.
·   In order to be fully credentialed, you must take specialized classroom training after you have taken requisite course of “Introduction of Southern Baptist Disaster Relief.”  You will need to renew these credentials every 3 years.
·   Disaster Relief credentials and the yellow hat/visor will be given after both the “Introduction to Southern Baptist Disaster Relief” and specialized classes have been taken.
·   Please check the Tennessee Baptist Convention Disaster Relief website www.tndisasterrelief.org  regarding Volunteer Requirements and Volunteer Responsibilities required by the North American Mission Board.
Because of new directives from Homeland Security, FEMA and other national agencies related to the training and screening of volunteer disaster relief workers, we must have a cost recovery plan. The cost of a new 3 year credential will be $36.00.
This fee will cover not only the cost of the ID and background check but also the cost of any of the basic training courses a volunteerwants to take (except for Chaplaincy, Childcare, and First Aid classes and other specialized classes such as ServSafe, etc.).

There will also be a new hat and a special Disaster Relief members pin given to those involved.

How can I help?

Our Disaster Relief teams are hard at work responding to needs throughout our county and state.  If you want to help, but cannot serve, they would appreciate donations to pay for fuel, equipment and repairs.
To donate to Knox County Disaster Relief ministry send checks payable to Knox County Association of Baptists

Get Involved

Serve Locally  There is great need in our county for disaster response every week of the year.  A disaster doesn’t have to affect an entire community.  If a tree falls on someone’s house, that is a disaster for that person at that time!  You do not have to have the certification credentials to serve in these circumstances.

Serve Globally  With your credentials, you can participate in a national or international call out for disaster response.  You can be trained in specialized classes including: chainsaw, flood recovery, mass feeding, shower/laundry response, rebuild,  bucket truck or other vehicle operation and other responses.
